What to do to improve the air quality in your home

Lucy Rice

The air quality in your home can have a huge impact on you and your family's health. Mould, faeces from pests and gas leaks can all be very harmful to your health and lead to serious illness. This is a problem also because it's difficult to know if the air in your home is polluted with things like this. However, there are ways to avoid this. To improve the air quality in your home and thereby improve the health of you and your family, there are a few things you can do.

Consultation

The first thing you should do in order to improve the air quality in your home is to contact an air quality consultant. Air quality consulting is a business made specifically to evaluate the air quality indoors and come up with ways to improve it. Remember to abstain from doing anything unusual with your home before the consultant does the evaluation. If your home is abnormally clean, the consultant might not be able to give you a complete evaluation, as the evaluation will only apply to when your home is very clean.

Attics and basements

Another thing you should do is to tend to the areas in your home where you usually don't spend that much time. Attics and basements are places where moisture can create mould and where pests tend to reside without you even knowing about it. Moisture and pests can affect the rest of the house as well, as these issues tend to spread. Make sure you have proper ventilation in these areas by controlling the air conditioning. If your only source of ventilation is windows, then you should consider getting air conditioning or exhaust fans installed. You could also install a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air.

Filters

You should also have a look at your central air system or air conditioning system to make sure they are functioning correctly. One of the most important things to do when examining your air conditioning system is to check if the filters in the units are clean. Dirty filters can let harmful particles go through them and make the entire unit useless for air quality purposes. Make sure to replace the dirty filters with filters approved by your local air quality services to make sure you get the best solution possible.
